None of these numbers is a promise for your yard specifically. Soil, slope, and what's already buried nearby move all of them — matching the tier to the actual water problem matters more than picking a number and digging to it.

Width and slope matter as much as depth

Depth gets all the attention, but a trench that's deep enough and flat, or narrow and packed with fines, still fails. Trench width runs a common minimum of about 12 inches — enough room for pipe, washed gravel, and a fabric wrap without pinching any of them.

Slope is the part that actually moves water. The common rule of thumb, not a code requirement, is roughly one-eighth inch of fall per foot at minimum, or about 1 inch for every 8 to 10 feet of run, sloped consistently toward wherever the water is allowed to come out. A trench with no fall, or a low spot partway down, isn't a slower drain. It's a buried puddle.

Why deeper is not automatically better

Going deeper costs more at every stage: more excavation, more gravel, more spoil hauled off, and it doesn't automatically catch more water. If the problem is water moving across the top few inches of soil, a trench dug to foundation depth just adds cost without adding drainage.

There's a real ceiling too. Dig too deep in the wrong spot and you can hit rock, a utility line, or a neighbor's footing. The right depth is the shallowest one that still gets ahead of the water, not the deepest one that fits the budget.

A drain dug at the wrong depth, or with no fall, doesn't get better with time. It fails on a predictable schedule instead. If yours already has, that's repair territory, not a redig from scratch.

What Knoxville's clay and shallow rock do to that number

Call 811 before you dig

Any trench deep enough to matter is deep enough to hit something you didn't expect. Tennessee law requires at least three working days' notice to 811 before digging, and it's free. Add a few feet of depth, tight fall tolerances, and a discharge point that has to work the first time, and most homeowners are better served calling in a proper installation than fighting the clay alone.

When depth is not the real question

Sometimes the honest answer has nothing to do with how deep to dig. If water is pooling in a flat spot with nowhere for a buried pipe to fall to, no amount of extra depth fixes that — that's a job for regrading or a catch basin and solid pipe, not a deeper trench.

If the water at your foundation is coming straight off a downspout that dumps at the wall, the fix is getting that water into a pipe and away from the house. Digging a drain around a problem a downspout extension would solve is spending real money at the wrong depth entirely.
